Agenti AI nelle piccole imprese:

Cosa significa, e cosa no

what the 10x growth really means

AI agents for small businesses: what the 10x growth really means

One number got a lot of attention in Italy this week: 10.8. It is the growth in users of "agentic" tools at Italian small and medium businesses, according to an OpenAI report. The number is real, but it is worth understanding what it measures and what it does not.

Then we look at what it means in practice for anyone who runs a shop, a studio or a craft business.

What is an AI agent (in plain words)

A chatbot answers your questions. An agent goes one step further: it receives a goal ("find three suppliers and compare prices"), looks up information, puts the pieces together and gives you a result. You do not guide it line by line: you hand over the task and check the finished work.

What the report says

The document is called Europe's Agentic Opportunity and OpenAI published it in October 2026. We read the original text, not just the articles commenting on it. These are the main figures:

FigureValue
Weekly users of agentic tools at EU small and medium businesses8.1 times the first week of May 2026
Same growth in Italy10.8 times, second in Europe after Belgium (12.1 times)
Share of text "tokens" produced by agentic tools in Italy, September 202665% of those generated by OpenAI's business customers

The agentic tools considered are ChatGPT Work and Codex.

What it means, and what it does not

A few cautions are needed, and we state them openly because a headline is not enough.

It is one vendor's data. It covers OpenAI's Enterprise and Business customers, not all Italian companies. By "SME" the report means companies with at most 200 associated users.

A 10x growth depends on where you start. The report gives multipliers, not absolute numbers: we do not know how many users there were in May. Also, ChatGPT Work launched in July, and the report itself says a significant part of the growth came after the launch. So part of it is simply the effect of a new product.

65% is not 65% of companies. It is the share of text generated by agentic tools among the tools already in use. An agent uses a lot of text just to read, plan and check: more "tokens" does not necessarily mean more useful work.

There is no measure of savings or quality. The report does not say how much time or money was saved. It says usage is growing, not that it pays off.

The honest reading is this: more and more people are trying agents, and Italian companies are not standing still. How that turns into results, the data does not show yet.

Three concrete ways to start without spending

You do not need a company subscription to find out whether an agent suits you. Three starting points, to adapt to your business:

  • Research and comparison. Ask it to find and compare suppliers, prices or rules that apply to your business, with sources. Then you check the sources: the agent speeds things up, the checking stays with you.
  • Drafting communications. A text for your website, a reply to a customer, a social media post. Start from the draft and correct it.
  • Keeping information in order. Summarise a long document, pull deadlines and key points out of a contract or a price list.

In all three cases the rule is the same: the agent prepares, you decide. For anything with consequences (contracts, prices, customer data) a person always needs to check. AInstAIn's point of view

The most interesting figure is not 10.8, but the fact that agentic tools are entering everyday work. We care about a simple idea: AI should be useful to people with little time and no IT department, in their own language, without having to open an account. AInstAIn is a free chat with web search and eight languages, built for that. Try it on one of the three uses above and judge for yourself whether it saves you time.
