Il 6 ottobre 2026 Mistral AI ha lanciato Large 4, il suo modello più grande. I pesi aperti però arriveranno solo a fine mese. Vediamo cosa è già verificabile e cosa no.
Cosa è stato annunciato
Mistral AI, l'azienda francese, ha presentato Mistral Large 4 (soprannominato "Le Chonk") il 6 ottobre 2026, come anteprima di ricerca disponibile via API. È un modello multimodale con circa 1 trilione di parametri, di cui circa 49 miliardi attivi per ogni token, quindi un'architettura a "esperti" (MoE) in cui solo una parte del modello lavora a ogni risposta.
I pesi non sono ancora scaricabili. Mistral prevede di pubblicarli a fine ottobre, dopo i test di sicurezza: sulla scheda del modello su Hugging Face la data indicata è il 31 ottobre. Fino ad allora il modello è accessibile solo tramite l'API di Mistral.

Cosa dicono i test indipendenti
Secondo Artificial Analysis, Large 4 ottiene 38 punti nel suo "Intelligence Index", un risultato vicino ad altri modelli recenti di fascia alta, e 50 nel suo indice dedicato alla cybersicurezza. Per questo lo definisce il modello più "intelligente" fuori da Stati Uniti e Cina. Va letto con cautela: è una valutazione di una singola società, su un'anteprima, e al lancio i risultati dei benchmark erano ancora in fase di pubblicazione.
Perché se ne parla
- Modelli aperti fuori dalla Cina. Mistral punta a essere il miglior modello a pesi aperti in particolare fuori dalla Cina.
- Risorse di calcolo. L'azienda dichiara di averlo addestrato con circa 4.000 GPU Nvidia, da due a tre volte meno di quelle attribuite ai concorrenti cinesi.
- Capitali. A settembre 2026 il round di serie D guidato da Samsung ha valutato Mistral 21 miliardi di euro.
- Settori mirati. Cybersicurezza, finanza e progettazione di chip sono gli ambiti indicati per il modello.
Cosa non sappiamo ancora
Mancano la licenza dei pesi, i benchmark pubblicati dall'azienda, le prestazioni in italiano (non abbiamo trovato dati specifici) e l'eventuale arrivo del modello nell'app di chat consumer di Mistral. Finché i pesi non saranno pubblici, chi vuole usarlo deve passare dall'API.
Cosa significa per chi usa i chatbot
Per l'utente comune non cambia nulla oggi: non c'è un pulsante nuovo da provare. Cambia il quadro generale, con un altro modello di fascia alta dichiarato aperto, utile soprattutto a sviluppatori e aziende che vogliono ospitare un modello in proprio. Quando uscirà, lo valuteremo sui nostri test.

On October 6, 2026 Mistral AI launched Large 4, its biggest model so far. The open weights will only arrive at the end of the month. Here is what can already be verified and what cannot.
What was announced
French company Mistral AI introduced Mistral Large 4 (nicknamed "Le Chonk") on October 6, 2026 as a research preview available through its API. It is a multimodal model with roughly 1 trillion parameters, about 49 billion of them active per token, which points to a mixture-of-experts (MoE) design where only part of the model works on each answer.
The weights are not downloadable yet. Mistral plans to release them at the end of October, after safety testing: the Hugging Face model page lists October 31. Until then the model is available only through Mistral's API.

What independent testing says
According to Artificial Analysis, Large 4 scores 38 on its Intelligence Index, close to other recent high-end models, and 50 on its cybersecurity index. It therefore calls it the most intelligent model from outside the US and China. Read this with caution: it is one company's evaluation of a preview, and benchmark results were still being published at launch.
Why it matters
- Open models outside China. Mistral aims to be the best open-weight model, especially outside China.
- Compute. The company says it trained the model on about 4,000 Nvidia GPUs, two to three times fewer than reported for Chinese rivals.
- Funding. In September 2026 a Series D round led by Samsung valued Mistral at €21 billion.
- Target sectors. Cybersecurity, finance and chip design are the stated focus areas.
What we still do not know
Still missing: the license of the weights, benchmarks published by the company, performance in Italian (we found no specific data) and whether the model will reach Mistral's consumer chat app. Until the weights are public, using it means going through the API.
What it means for chatbot users
For everyday users nothing changes today: there is no new button to try. The wider picture changes, with another top-tier model declared open, mostly useful for developers and companies that want to host a model themselves. When it ships, we will evaluate it in our own tests.
